So who are the actual losers of corporations walking back their climate commitments?
Not the climate … GHG emissions were going up, up when the targets and commitments were in place!
The Bloomberg report: “Broken Promises. Companies are Abandoning their #Climate Pledges.” https://lnkd.in/gXdRiMbu
Given most of these commitments - much like the corporate DEI commitments- were mostly symbolic with few actually significantly implemented, it’s not the climate or people who lose by this corporate retreat on paper promises.
But the corporate walkback does trample their climate-focused nonprofit and consulting partners reputations. They have a business model based on brandishishing their expertise and ability to guide corporations on their sustainability journeys - they are the corporate whispers. But the walk back has left egg on their faces.
Moreover, it’s these same corporations who are also key benefactors and customers of the nonprofits and consultants. The walk back means less reason for corporations to “partner” with ie pay $$$ nonprofits and private consultants and also academic institutions.
